The new service, which will run between 27 May and 30 October, is the first daily route to be operated out of the gateway since EUjet went bankrupt in 2005.

It is thought that the new connection could boost the number of passengers passing through Kent Airport from 50,000 a year to more than half a million by 2014.

Airport chief executive Matt Clarke commented: “I’m sure this route will be hugely popular with people in Kent because Edinburgh is such a great place to visit.”

Pledging to offer href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk">cheap airline tickets on the route, Flybe chief commercial officer Mike Rutter added: “We expect our new route to be popular both with business travellers and with those planning their holidays or weekends away and wanting their budgets to go as far as possible.”

Flybe’s new service will be operated by a 78-seat Bombardier Q-400 turboprop aircraft.

Its announcement comes as the carrier unveils a new six-times weekly service from href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Manchester-Intl/">Manchester Airport to href="http://www.bournemouthairport.com/" target="_blank">Bournemouth Airport, which will also begin on 27 May.
