As of last Thursday the airline has been running daily title="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Glasgow/" href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Glasgow/" target="_self">flights to Glasgow and Manchester from Shannon, in addition to title="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Birmingham/" href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Birmingham/" target="_self">flights to Birmingham and Bristol six times per week.

The new routes from Cork will commence on 31 October, with href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Manchester/">flights to Manchester operating twice a day and flights to Birmingham running once on Saturday and twice on all other days. Fares for the new routes from both airports begin at €29.99 one-way including taxes.

Commenting on the schedule expansion, Aer Arann corporate affairs director Andrew Kelly said: “We are delighted to launch these flights as part of the franchise agreement in the same week that we launched new franchise services to four UK cities from Shannon.”

He added: “The addition of these new services, combined with the services already operating under the Aer Lingus Regional franchise from Cork offer passengers travelling to and from each of these destinations greater choice, flexibility and convenience.”

Ryanair take-over of Aer Lingus blocked again

class="alignright size-full wp-image-29278" title="Ryanair merger with Aer Lingus deemed anti-competitive" src="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/EU-flag.jpg" alt="Ryanair merger with Aer Lingus deemed anti-competitive" width="269" height="202" /> href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Ryanair/">Ryanair has once again had its plans to take over href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Aer-Lingus/">Aer Lingus scuppered following a ruling by the European General Court, one of the top courts in Europe.

The low-cost carrier had been appealing a 2007 decision by the European Commission which said that a merger between the two airlines was anti-competitive.

Upholding that earlier ruling, the court also dismissed a separate legal challenge by Aer Lingus which would have forced Ryanair to give up its stake in the flag carrier.

Ryanair has been a significant minority shareholder in its rival ever since Aer Lingus was privatised in 2006, with its current stake amounting to 29.3 per cent.

It has twice launched hostile take-over bids, faltering in 2007 on anti-competitive grounds and then again in 2008 when the Irish government, a fellow stakeholder, objected.

Re-affirming the earlier decision by the EU’s competition enforcer, the European General Court today said a merger would “significantly impede effective competition as a result of the creation of a dominant position on a number of routes from or to href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Dublin-DUB/">Dublin, Cork and href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Shannon-SNN/">Shannon“.

But it also ruled out forcing Ryanair to divest its shareholding in Aer Lingus, saying it was a minority stake which did not confer control of the company to Ryanair.

Aviation experts say a third take-over bid by Ryanair is unlikely given the latest court ruling.

Ryanair and Aer Lingus in Irish price war

id="attachment_13165" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 251px"> class="size-full wp-image-13165" title="© nafra cendrers / Flickr" src="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/ryanair-aer-lingus.jpg" alt="Ryanair targets 'civilised' Aer Lingus" width="251" height="170" />
class="wp-caption-text">Ryanair targets 'civilised' Aer Lingus

Air passengers in Ireland could benefit from lower fares following href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Ryanair/">Ryanair’s announcement that it will directly compete with href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Aer-Lingus/">Aer Lingus on several of its popular sun destinations.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary has confirmed that the low-cost airline will launch seven new routes from href="http://www.corkairport.com/index.asp" target="_blank">Cork Airport – all of which are currently served by the Irish flag carrier.

The move comes despite an attempt by Aer Lingus to downplay suggestions of a price war, rebranding itself last week as a “civilised” airline whose customers care about more than price.

Mr O’Leary said the new routes – which focus on Portuguese and Spanish destinations popular with sun-seekers – will be available during the peak summer period only.

“We will operate them for three months – June, July and August,” he told The Irish Independent. “If they go, I’d say they could come back in 2011. If we can carry a lot of people from Cork to the sun in three months of the summer at a fraction of the fares charged by Aer Lingus, let’s do it.”

The Ryanair boss added: “It serves two agendas. One, it gives us more growth at Cork Airport. And two, it causes significant damage to our weaker and smaller competitors.”

He also predicted that Ryanair would undercut Aer Lingus’ fares by up to 48 per cent on some routes, though the Irish flag carrier was quick to announce its own plans for expansion.

Aer Lingus spokesman Stephen Kavanagh said the airline will operate 140 weekly departures from Cork Airport during the summer – its largest offering ever – which will include new flights to href="http://www.bristolairport.co.uk/" target="_blank">Bristol, href="http://www.tbicardiffairport.com/" target="_blank">Cardiff, href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Edinburgh-EDI/">Edinburgh, href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Glasgow-Intl-GLA/">Glasgow, href="http://www.jerseyairport.com/" target="_blank">Jersey, La Rochelle, href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Gatwick/">London Gatwick and href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Reina-Sofia-Tenerife-Sur/">Tenerife.

Ryanair’s new routes from Cork Airport will be href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Alicante/">Alicante, href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Barcelona/">Barcelona Reus, href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Bordeaux/">Bordeaux, href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Faro/">Faro, La Rochelle, Lanzarote and href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Malaga/">Malaga, with one-way fares starting from £39.99.

Irish airport strike hits Ryanair and Aer Lingus

id="attachment_12574" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 280px"> class="size-full wp-image-12574 " title="© Dave Heuts / Flickr" src="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/air-traffic.jpg" alt="Delays and cancellations expected in Ireland" width="280" height="184" />
class="wp-caption-text">Delays and cancellations expected in Ireland

Passengers are bracing for delays  and cancellations at airports across Ireland today as the country’s air traffic controllers prepare to stage a walkout.

href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Dublin-DUB/">Dublin Airport, href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Shannon-SNN/">Shannon Airport and href="http://www.corkairport.com/" target="_blank">Cork Airport will all be affected by the industrial action, which is due to get underway at 2pm and will last until 6pm.

href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Aer-Lingus/">Aer Lingus has already cancelled 64 flights while href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Ryanair/">Ryanair has axed a further 48, and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) is warning that up to 150 more could be affected.

Air traffic controllers are staging the walkout following the suspension of 15 members, who reportedly failed to comply with new technological requirements.

Liam Kavanagh, director of human resources at the IAA, urged the IMPACT union to reconsider industrial action, saying upgrades to the air traffic controller system had been essential.

Dismissing calls for higher wages, he commented: “Airlines cannot afford to pay any increases in the current economic climate. The aviation industry is on its knees.”

The average salary for a European air traffic controller is about €200,000 – well above the €160,000 salary that Irish air traffic controllers currently take home, including benefits.

Despite their below-average pay, however, Ryanair issued a characteristically unsympathetic response, branding the Irish controllers “overpaid, underworked, civil servants”.

Passengers are advised to call their airline before setting off for the airport.

Aer Lingus axes flights from Gatwick Airport

Hard times continue for the Irish flag carrier

Hard times continue for the Irish flag carrier

Aer Lingus is cutting the volume of flights it operates out of Gatwick Airport, less than one year after opening a new base at the London gateway.

The number of aircraft Aer Lingus has based at Gatwick will fall from five to three by the end of March, reversing plans to grow its presence there throughout 2010.

Its reduced capacity means that the Irish flag carrier will only be able to operate four routes from the airport – Malaga, Dublin, Knock and a new link to Cork.

The announcement follows a difficult period for Aer Lingus, which posted losses of £110 million last year and has fought off repeated hostile takeover bids by Ryanair.

Despite seeing a nine per cent spike in passenger numbers during December, the carrier is forecasting only a “small” operating profit for the second half of 2009.

It blamed the downturn on “weak consumer demand and continuing challenges in the UK operating environment, which have impacted aviation sector performance generally”.

Aer Lingus began flying from Gatwick last April, opening seven connections including Knock, Faro, Nice, Malaga, Zurich, Vienna and Munich. It then pressed ahead with expansion plans in June, adding Bucharest, Eindhoven, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Warsaw and Vilnius to its route network.

Alongside the Gatwick cutbacks, Aer Lingus has also deferred delivery of two new Airbus A320 planes, pushing their arrival back by six months to spring 2011.
