Study: Fares lowest 8 weeks before flight

class="alignright size-full wp-image-30713" title="According to new research, the cheapest flights are available four weeks before departure. " src="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/plane_tickets.jpg" alt="According to new research, the cheapest flights are available four weeks before departure. " width="233" height="155" />

The optimum time to purchase airfares is eight weeks before departure, according to a new study from the University of Madrid.

Its research, led by economist Makoto Watanabe, reportedly takes into account myriad factors that affect ticket price fluctuations.

Booking too far in advance can be a gamble, for example, as it leaves scope for unforeseen circumstances arising.

But on the other hand fares tend to rise steeply as the departure date approaches, meaning that fares purchased close to the date of travel are often the most expensive.

Writing in an earlier research piece with Dr Marc Möller, Dr Watanabe compared and contrasted trends in airfare prices with those in West End theatre tickets.

The duo’s paper, Advance Purchase Discounts versus Clearance Sales, noted: “The purchase of airline and theatre tickets are both examples where individual demand uncertainty and rationing risks interfere.”

Emphasising key differences between the two, the economists added: “However, there exists empirical evidence which shows that airline ticket prices typically increase over time, while theatre tickets are often sold at a discount on the day of the performance.”

These differences can be attributed to the relative scarcity of last-minute airplane seats to key destinations such as London, as compared with the abundance of tickets for long-running West End musicals.

Curiously, Dr Watanabe’s new research also suggests that cheaper airfares are likely to be purchased in the afternoon rather than in the morning.

He speculated that this is due to airlines relying on leisure travellers booking at home after work, whereas business travellers are more likely to book at work in the morning.

IATA: Passengers returning to the skies

class="alignright size-full wp-image-29010" title="Passenger demand finally takes off" src="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/iata.jpg" alt="Passenger demand finally takes off" width="315" height="198" />Consumer demand for href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk">flights surpassed pre-recession levels in May and looks set to continue rising throughout 2010, the airline industry’s leading group has claimed.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said year-on-year passenger traffic rose nearly 12 per cent last month, pushing it marginally above the levels seen in early 2008.

But it noted that capacity increases were lagging far behind passenger demand, having nudged up by a mere 4.8 per cent in May, which could potentially lead to higher airfares.

Commenting on the figures, IATA director general Giovanni Bisignani said: “Demand rebounded strongly in May following the impact of the European volcanic ash fiasco in April. Passenger traffic is now one per cent above pre-recession levels, while the freight market is six per cent bigger.”

He advised global airlines to “[n]urture the recovery” by ensuring that extra capacity matches extra demand, and called on all groups within the industry to focus on cost-cutting.

The IATA data also re-affirms that Europe is lagging behind other regions, with demand spiking by just 8 per cent against 11 per cent in North America and 13 per cent in the Asia Pacific. The region with the highest growth was Africa and the Middle East, which grew by 17 per cent.

Iceland woos travellers with viral campaign

class="alignright size-full wp-image-27760" title="Flights to Reykjavik running as normal" src="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Reykjavik3.jpg" alt="Flights to Reykjavik running as normal" width="380" height="261" />

The Icelandic government has enlisted one third of the country’s 320,000 inhabitants as part of a massive online campaign geared at kick-starting the summer travel season.

Dubbed ‘Inspired By Iceland’, the viral campaign involved more than five million Twitter messages and enjoyed the support of celebrities ranging from Yoko Ono to Stephen Fry.

Iceland has been keen to get the message out that the Eyjafjallajökull volcano is no longer active, and passenger href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Reykjavik/">flights to Reykjavik are operating entirely as normal.

The campaign kicked off on 3 June, when Iceland’s residents were invited to log onto href="http://www.inspiredbyiceland.com/" target="_blank">inspiredbyiceland.com and submit a message explaining what they love about the country. The online buzz quickly snowballed, with more than one million people sharing photos and videos of Iceland.

Alongside the grassroots drive several celebrities also lent their support, with Twitter giant Stephen Fry tweeting his support by saying Iceland is “alive and charming as ever”.

Yoko Ono also wrote about the campaign on her blog href="http://imaginepeace.com/archives/11313" target="_blank">Imagine peace, while multi-talented Viggo Mortensen recorded a video for inspiredbyiceland.com praising the natural beauty of the country. Even Jamie Oliver did his bit by encouraging Brits to experiment with Icelandic food.

Commenting on the success of the online campaign, Katrín Júlíusdóttir, Iceland’s Minister of Industry, said: “To see so many people back our campaign has been incredible. We’ve been able to tell the world that Iceland is a country that can inspire everyone who comes here.”

Yoko Ono’s blogpost echoed those sentiments, with the former wife of John Lennon writing: “The eruption in Eyjafjallajökull has given Iceland media attention like never before.”

She continued: “The downside of course is that people are nervous about coming to Iceland at the moment. Some think that the whole land is covered with ash and that Iceland is in a state of emergency. The truth is that only a very small part of Iceland is being influenced by the eruption.”

Iceland Express recently launched a href="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/2010/05/iceland-express-transatlantic-sale/">transatlantic sale offering href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/New-York/">flights to New York from several European bases, including London Gatwick, via its hub in Reykjavik.

Jet2.com expands Manchester Airport base

class="alignright size-full wp-image-23590" title="Jet2 adds Manchester flights" src="http://news.cheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/jet2.jpg" alt="Jet2 adds Manchester flights" width="310" height="169" />Low-cost carrier href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airlines/Jet2-com/">Jet2.com has announced that it will expand its presence at href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/airports/Manchester-Intl/">Manchester Airport with the launch of two brand new routes.

Flights to Hurghada in Egypt begin on 15 October, costing £79.99 one-way, while services to Bodrum in Turkey start on 16 May 2011 for £69.99 one-way.

A further eight destinations will be added to the gateway next summer, with Jet2.com restoring connections to Faro, Alicante, Ibiza, Malaga, Madeira, Murcia, Tel Aviv and Monastir. One-way fares start from just £39.99, including all fares and taxes.

With the addition of href="http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Hurghada/">flights to Hurghada, Jet2.com has now serviced a total of 50 destinations out of Manchester Airport – something that boss Philip Meeson called a “considerable milestone”.

“It is an extremely popular destination offering year-round sunshine, dazzling beaches and world-class diving,” Mr Meeson commented. “And since it sits outside the Euro-Zone, offers fantastic value to those sun-seekers wanting to stretch their budgets that little bit further.”

Jet2.com’s operations at Manchester Airport have grown by 27 per cent over the past year, with the airline now carrying one million passengers annually from the north-west base.
